Latino Museum Studies Program (LMSP)

Introduction
Organized by the Smithsonian Latino Center (SLC), the Latino Museum Studies Program (LMSP) was established in 1994 to increase the representation, documentation, knowledge and interpretation of Latino art, culture and history, and focuses on developing museum practice within a framework of Latino cultural studies. The program includes a four-week seminar designed to provide participants with the tools to enhance their leadership, research and creative skills through a series of lectures, workshops and practical experiences at the Smithsonian Institution and other research facilities within the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The curriculum covers various areas of museum and cultural work including curatorial practice, education, exhibition design, collections management, public programming, administration and development.

Latino Pool Initiatives (SI internal only!)

The Latino Initiatives Pool funding process works as follows: Every year, different Smithsonian units and museums present proposals to the Center that promote Latino achievement or contributions. Proposals range from exhibits, collections, educational initiatives and research to community outreach. The Center, acting on the recommendations of an advisory committee, makes decisions on which programs to fund based on a number of different factors including public impact and cultural and historical significance. The Center’s goal in this process is to fund only those projects that truly represent significant highlights of Latino culture. In the past ten years, the Center has distributed approximately $10 million in Congressional funds to more than 250 successful projects. In many instances, Center staff provides technical and outreach assistance to these initiatives. Application Guidelines and Application Instructions.

Young Ambassadors Program

The Smithsonian Latino Center's Young Ambassadors Program consists of an in-depth seminar designed to encourage Latino youth to examine and embrace their cultural identity and an internship opportunity that increases the participants exposure to the arts and culture field. The goal of the project is to foster knowledge and pride in Latino cultural identity, as well as provide the participants with financial support with which to seek higher education. Through the program, we empower Latino youth to develop leadership and academic skills.
