Looking at Art (cont'd)

Color

The unifying element in Sing Me a Rainbow: An Artistic Medley from Trinidad and Tobago is color.

Every color can be made by mixing three basic colors, called primary colors, plus black or white. The primary colors are red, blue, and yellow. Colors can be made by combining certain amounts of one, two, or three of the primary colors, and/or black and white.

Line

Line is the most common element in visual art. Whether straight or curved, the line tells us where a shape starts and ends, where it meets another shape or color, and it often acts as an arrow, drawing your eye from one part of the work to the next.

Color in the shapes above with markers. Color the square red, the triangle yellow and the circle blue. See how the three primary colors mix to make others! Mix a color wheel! Beginning with the primary colors create a full palette of colors; add black for shades and white for tints. Can you match the colors in a painting or photograph from the exhibition?
