The Smithsonian Latino Center and the National Museum of the American Indian present a concert by Capilla del Sol, an Argentine baroque-music ensemble. The concert will be held at the National Museum of the American Indian’s Rasmuson Theater at Fourth Street and Independence Avenue S.W., Sunday, March 7. It is free and open to the public.
The concert is the first event in the Smithsonian Latino Center’s series “Argentina at the Smithsonian 2010,” which features two exhibitions and more than 20 public programs highlighting the art, history, culture and science of Argentina in celebration of the bicentennial of its independence. This series was developed in collaboration with the Secretariat of Culture of the Nation of Argentina, the Embassy of Argentina in Washington, D.C., and partnering museums across the Smithsonian. The schedule of events is available from the Smithsonian Latino Center Web site at http://latino.si.edu/newsevents.
Capilla del Sol is a vocal and instrumental ensemble based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, that specializes in pre-classical music from Spain and Latin America. They will be performing the music of major feast days of the liturgical year from the Jesuit missions of Bolivia. The group, formed in 2004, uses original instruments and performance practices to explore and recreate the vast music repertoire of the Spanish American baroque era. The members draw on solid musicological knowledge that explains and contextualizes the social and musical reality of the period.
Since its creation, Capilla del Sol has performed extensively in its home country and beyond, including at the Festival Misiones de Chiquitos (Bolivia, 2004, 2006 and 2008), Música Clásica por los Caminos del Vino (Mendoza, Argentina, 2004), the Tropical Baroque Festival (U.S., 2006) and many others. It is the ensemble-in-residence at the Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Isaac Fernández Blanco in Buenos Aires. Its members include Silvina Sadoly, soprano; Adriana Sansone, soprano; Verónica Canaves, alto; Pablo Travaglino, tenor; Ramiro Albino, conductor and recorder; Alicia Morán, violin; Virginia Llansa, violin; María Jesús Olóndriz, cello; Evar Cativiela, vihuela; Federico Ciancio, organ; and Eduardo Rodríguez, bassoon. Leila Makarius and Jorge Cometti are the artistic directors and coordinators.
The Smithsonian Latino Center is a unit of the Smithsonian Institution dedicated to ensuring that Latino contributions to art, science and the humanities are highlighted, understood and advanced through the development and support of public programs, scholarly research, exhibitions and educational opportunities at the Smithsonian Institution and its affiliated organizations across the United States and internationally.
