Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, offers a wonderful opportunity to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Latinas and Latinos within the United States. Here are eight ways to experience and embrace the rich diversity of Latino heritage:

1. Learn and Share Latino History:
Dive into the history of Latinas and Latinos and their contributions to the United States. This can include reading books, watching documentaries, or attending events about influential figures and historical events. Share what you learn with others to spread awareness!

2. Visit Museums and Historical Sites:
Many museums have exhibits dedicated to Latino or Hispanic art, history, and culture. Visiting these can provide a deeper understanding and appreciation. Our exhibition “¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States” explores Latino identity, immigration stories, historical legacies, and how Latinas and Latinos have shaped the nation. Visit “¡Presente!” in our gallery at the National Museum of American History. Plan your visit!

3. Explore Latino Cuisine:
Try a new Latino dish! You can make it at home or support local Latino-owned restaurants and food trucks and enjoy a meal that reflects the diverse flavors of Latino foodways.

4. Attend Cultural Events:
Look for local events celebrating Latino or Hispanic Heritage, such as festivals, parades, art exhibits, and music and dance performances. This year, we will host events honoring Celia Cruz on Sept. 20 and a festival focused on Latinos in sports on Oct. 12. Find out more here.

5. Read Books by Latino Authors:
Add books by Latino authors to your reading list. This can include both fiction and non-fiction works that provide insight into Latino culture, history, and personal experiences. See publications in our Children’s and Intergenerational Literacy Program Series and our educational resources, here.

6. Support Latino-Owned Businesses:
Make a conscious effort to shop at Latino-owned businesses. This can include boutiques, bookstores, art galleries, and other enterprises. Supporting these businesses helps sustain the community and promotes economic growth within Latino communities.

7. Watch Films and TV Shows:
Explore films and TV shows that highlight Hispanic/Latino stories and actors. Many streaming platforms have a variety of content from and about Latino culture. Consider watching classics as well as contemporary works to get a broad perspective.

8. Celebrate with Family and Friends:
Organize a gathering where you can share Latino music, dance, food, and stories. This can be a fun and engaging way to celebrate the culture together. Encourage everyone to bring a dish, share a tale, or perform a traditional dance to make the celebration interactive and educational.

Observing Hispanic Heritage Month is about recognizing and appreciating the rich cultural tapestry that Latinas and Latinos contribute to society. It’s a time for learning, sharing, and embracing the diverse traditions and histories that shape our communities. How do you celebrate your Latino heritage?
